First Lady Sajidha Mohamed on Tuesday hosted a delegation of Japan Overseas Cooperation Volunteers (JOCV) at Mulee’aage, the Official Residence of the President, where she expressed heartfelt appreciation for their sustained contributions to communities across the Maldives.

The delegation was joined by Japanese Ambassador to the Maldives, Ishigami Rumiko, and the Director of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).

During the meeting, volunteers shared their experiences and described the wide-ranging nature of their work in local communities.

Their efforts encompass education, health, and sports development, including the introduction and promotion of handball, baseball, and athletics.

Beyond athletics, volunteers have also enriched island life by teaching music, handicrafts, and culinary arts, fostering cross-cultural understanding and valuable skill development.

The First Lady conveyed her gratitude for Japan’s continuous support through the JICA programme, commending the volunteers for their dedication and positive impact.

She emphasised that their service not only benefits local communities but also strengthens the enduring friendship and cooperation between the Maldives and Japan.

The JOCV initiative has been active in the Maldives since 1982, with more than 350 volunteers contributing to national development efforts across various sectors over the past four decades.
