UK Returns Historic Chairs Used in Maldives’ Independence Signing

The Government of the United Kingdom has presented the Maldives with the original chairs used during the signing of the country’s Independence Agreement on 26 July 1965.

The symbolic handover took place in a formal ceremony attended by Nicholas David Low, the British High Commissioner to the Maldives, and Dr Abdulla Khaleel, Minister of Foreign Affairs, who received the gift on behalf of the Maldivian government.

Adam Naseer Ibrahim, Minister of Dhivehi Language, Culture and Heritage, was also present at the event.

In his address, Dr Khaleel expressed gratitude to the UK for the meaningful gesture, noting that the chairs represent a pivotal moment in the Maldives’ journey to independence and sovereignty.

He added that the gift underscores the deep historical ties and mutual respect between the two nations.

High Commissioner Low reaffirmed the United Kingdom’s commitment to strengthening bilateral relations, emphasizing the shared history and continued collaboration between the Maldives and the UK across multiple sectors.
