Police Launch Largest Anti-Drug Operation in Maldives; 97 Arrested So Far
Maldivian authorities have arrested 97 individuals and searched 86 locations across the country as part of “Operation Alimagu”, the largest nationwide anti-drug operation ever conducted in the Maldives.
The operation was launched early this morning following President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s directive to intensify efforts against narcotics trafficking and dismantle drug networks operating across the islands.
According to the Maldives Police Service, Operation Alimaghu began at 5:30 a.m., mobilizing more than 500 officers from various specialized units and regional commands.
Coordinated teams are simultaneously carrying out searches, raids, and enforcement actions at over 100 locations nationwide.
Police confirmed that 97 people have been arrested so far, and a large quantity of narcotics and cash has been seized.
While photographs of confiscated items have been released, detailed figures and specifics about the substances recovered have not yet been disclosed.
The operation, authorities said, is based on intelligence-led investigations targeting individuals and groups involved in large-scale drug trafficking.
Police emphasized that further arrests and seizures are expected as the operation continues.
Ahead of the launch, President Muizzu posted on X (formerly Twitter), reaffirming his administration’s commitment to eradicating drug abuse and trafficking from the country.
He wrote that the government is working extensively to make the Maldives a nation completely free from the scourge of drugs.
Operation Alimagu marks one of the most extensive coordinated law enforcement initiatives in recent Maldivian history, reflecting the government’s heightened focus on public safety and its zero-tolerance stance on narcotics.
