President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has praised the commencement of three major government policies that officially took effect on Saturday, marking a significant milestone in his administration’s reform agenda.

Speaking on the occasion, President Muizzu said the policies were formulated following extensive public consultations and expert discussions, reflecting his government’s pledge to make decisions that align with the needs and values of the Maldivian people.

One of the most notable reforms is the introduction of a generational ban on tobacco, a first in the country’s history.

Under this new policy, Maldivians born on or after 1 January 2007 are prohibited from using, possessing, or selling tobacco products.

The policy also bars vendors from selling tobacco to anyone under 21 years of age or to those born after the generational cut-off. Violations of this ban will be subject to penalties, underscoring the administration’s strong commitment to safeguarding public health and promoting a smoke-free future.

In another key decision, the government has lifted the ban on gulper shark fishing under a newly introduced management plan aimed at ensuring sustainability.

The policy shift follows detailed consultations with the Ministry of Tourism and Environment and the Ministry of Fisheries and Ocean Resources.

The move, first announced by President Muizzu in August, is intended to support the fisheries sector while maintaining ecological balance.

Additionally, the government has rolled out a comprehensive salary revision under the President’s pay harmonisation policy.

The adjustment applies to employees across the civil service, judiciary, and local council secretariats, with the new pay structure reflected in November’s salaries.

In a social media post, President Muizzu expressed his gratitude to all individuals and institutions involved in the implementation of these policies.

He highlighted that the initiatives were introduced to enhance the well-being of Maldivian citizens and drive the nation toward sustainable progress.

The launch of the three policies has drawn widespread public approval, with citizens and industry stakeholders describing them as forward-looking and beneficial to the nation’s long-term development.
