President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has announced that one-third of government employees will transition to remote work by 2028, under the administration’s transformative ‘Maldives 2.0’ digital strategy launched Friday evening.

The announcement was made at the inaugural session of the Maldives 2.0 Digital Transformation Summit, held at Barceló Nasandhura, marking the start of a two-day event featuring local and international experts in digital governance.

According to President Dr. Muizzu, the government plans to complete the full digitalization of public services within the next three years.

Once the initiative is in place, over 16,000 of the 49,000 government employees will work remotely.

Beginning in 2028, one-third of the 49,000 employees currently working in the government across the state will be converted to work-from-home

President Muizzu stated

The President highlighted that the move would significantly improve efficiency within government offices, reduce the need for physical presence, and streamline service delivery.

Civil servants under the new policy will be required to complete a fixed number of working hours weekly and attend office as needed.

However, roles that require physical presence, such as teaching, will remain unaffected.

He added that the Maldives 2.0 initiative is a key part of the government's long-term vision to achieve developed nation status by 2040, with the first priority being the eradication of corruption through a fully digitized and transparent public service system.
