President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu announced today that 150,000 expatriate workers in the Maldives have completed biometric registration as part of the government’s initiative to address undocumented labour.

The announcement was made via his official ‘X’ account, where he highlighted the progress as a key milestone in ensuring legal recognition and protection for foreign workers.

President Dr. Muizzu extended his gratitude to immigration personnel and technical teams for their commitment and hard work in implementing the initiative.

The biometric registration process, which began on May 2, 2024, involves collecting ten fingerprints and capturing facial recognition photographs.

It is part of a broader government initiative to establish a comprehensive system to identify and regulate expatriate workers across the country.

In his statement, President Dr. Muizzu emphasized that migrant workers form the backbone of the Maldivian labour force and underscored the importance of addressing their living and working conditions.

He noted that undocumented workers have long faced exploitation and denial of basic rights, and the new system aims to bring a permanent solution to this issue.

He emphasised that the establishment of a biometric identification system is a vital step towards protecting the rights of foreign workers and addressing long-standing labour challenges.

In his official address marking International Labour Day, the President encouraged parents to raise children with a strong work ethic and a mindset oriented toward productivity.

He reiterated this message in a separate social media post, reinforcing the importance of shaping future generations with values that contribute to national development.
