MDP to lead May Day rally in Malé
The opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has announced plans to hold a rally in Malé on May 1 in observance of International Labor Day, calling for greater accountability from the government.
The rally is scheduled to begin at 8:30 p.m. from Artificial Beach.
Speaking at a press conference, former Alifushi MP Mohamed Rasheed Hussain, known as Bigey, said the MDP has long advocated the rights of the people and will continue to do so through its participation in the May Day movement.
He reaffirmed the party’s commitment to holding the current administration accountable, stating that Maldivians across the country are grappling with worsening living conditions and economic pressures.
Let's start with basic rights. Every citizen wants to eat and drink. They need light. But the lack of subsidies is affecting them. Besides, the most basic thing is health, there is difficulty in having access to medication and getting necessary services
He said
“There is no one in Maldives who does not suffer from basic hardships” he said, accusing the government of systematically violating the rights of its citizens.
Bigey also alleged that political influence is undermining employment opportunities, claiming that individuals who oppose the government face discrimination in the job market.
He said positions are being distributed based on political allegiance rather than merit, despite the government lacking sufficient resources to support such practices.
The MDP’s May Day rally is expected to focus on these grievances, amplifying concerns over economic inequality, political favoritism, and weakening public services.
