Maldives' first-ever salt factory opens in Dhidhdhoo
Marking a historic milestone in economic diversification, the Maldives has witnessed the opening of its first-ever salt production facility in Dhidhdhoo, introducing a new industry to a nation long celebrated for its crystal-clear seas and tourism-driven economy.
This pioneering project is a joint venture between Japanese partners and the Maldivian company M. Deep Investments.
The factory, which produces the brand "Ten Py Sun Salt," is the result of extensive research conducted in Japan, evaluating the suitability of Maldivian seawater for salt production.
According to M. Deep, Maldivian seawater is of high quality and rich in beneficial minerals, making it ideal for producing nutrient-rich sea salt.
The company plans to export the salt to Japan while also distributing it to resorts across the Maldives.
Beyond standard cooking salt, the factory is expected to produce various types of specialty salts and will eventually expand operations to other islands and resorts depending on the success of Dhidhdhoo branch.
Economic Minister Mohamed Saeed hailed the opening of the factory, calling it a significant step towards economic diversification.
He reiterated the government’s commitment to supporting such ventures.
