Maldives parliament speaker Abdul Raheem Abdulla has reaffirmed the Maldives’ unwavering commitment to the Bandung Principles and called on members of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) to uphold justice, peace, and sustainable development through international cooperation.

Speaking at the 4th Conference of the NAM Parliamentary Network, held as part of the IPU 150th Assembly in Tashkent, Speaker Abdul Raheem highlighted the continued relevance of the Bandung Principles, 70 years after their inception.

These principles, including non-interference, peaceful dispute resolution, and mutual respect in international relations, remain vital amid today’s global challenges, he said.

This is the second time the Maldives Parliament is participating in the NAM Parliamentary Network. It reflects our deep dedication to independence, fairness, and peaceful cooperation

He stated

He particularly emphasized the urgency of collective action on climate change, describing it as a “direct and growing threat” to small island states like the Maldives.

He urged NAM members to strengthen efforts toward environmental justice and sustainable solutions.

On domestic policy, Speaker Abdul Raheem noted the Maldives Parliament's ongoing efforts to promote inclusive development through key legislation such as the Social Protection Act and the Decentralization Act.

He said parliamentary committees like the National Development and Heritage Committee and the Human Rights and Gender Committee ensure government accountability and alignment with principles of equity and good governance.

Reiterating the importance of national sovereignty, the Speaker said NAM members must continue to resist foreign influence and safeguard peace through diplomacy.

As we move forward, let us commit to justice, peace and sustainable development, and create a future where all nations thrive in harmony

he concluded.
