Foreign Minister Dr. Abdulla Khaleel has denied claims that the Maldives is supporting Ukraine in the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine.

The controversy arose after Maldives President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, currently on an official visit to Estonia, attended a meeting with Estonian officials at the country’s parliament.

Following the meetings, a post on social media platform 'X' thanked the Maldives for its support of international law and backing Ukraine.

Responding to these claims, Foreign Minister Dr. Khaleel clarified that the Maldives has not taken sides in the Russia-Ukraine war.

He emphasized that the country’s foreign policy remains unchanged and is guided by principles of neutrality, non-interference, and maintaining positive relations with all nations.

The minister highlighted that the Maldives’ voting record at the United Nations reflects this balanced approach.

Dr. Khaleel reiterated that the Maldives consistently supports the sovereignty and independence of smaller nations when such values are undermined.

He noted that the nation’s foreign policy prioritizes the welfare of its people and maintaining its own independence and sovereignty while fostering diplomatic ties worldwide.

Estonia, a strong supporter of Ukraine in the war, provides military and financial assistance to Ukraine.

Meanwhile, Russia remains a key partner for the Maldives, particularly in the tourism sector.

Russia is the second-largest market for Maldivian tourism, with Russian tourists being among the highest spenders in the Maldives.
