Hassan Latheef, a founding member and president of The Democrats, has officially stepped down from his position.

Sources confirm that he submitted his resignation letter to the party’s vice president yesterday, following calls from some members of the party’s general assembly for him to relinquish his role.

Reports suggest that Hassan Latheef may soon return to the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), his former political home, as speculation grows about his next move.

The Democrats, established by former President Mohamed Nasheed and his allies after their split from the MDP, have recently faced mounting internal challenges.

Alongside Hassan Latheef’s resignation, key figures such as former MP Ali Azim have also left the party, reportedly to join MDP.

Additionally, Hussain Amr, the party’s vice-presidential candidate in the last election and former STO Managing Director, has officially rejoined MDP.

The recent resignations highlight increasing instability within The Democrats as the party struggles to maintain relevance.

The departures come after the party’s poor performance in the most recent parliamentary elections, where they failed to secure any seats.
