Maldives backs UN resolution seeking ICJ opinion on humanitarian access in Palestine
The Maldives has expressed strong support for a United Nations General Assembly resolution requesting an advisory opinion from the International Court of Justice (ICJ) on the humanitarian obligations of Israel.
The resolution, led by Norway alongside a group of states, seeks to clarify Israel’s responsibilities regarding the presence and activities of the United Nations, international organizations, and third states in the Occupied Palestinian Territory.
Maldives co-sponsored the resolution, which was adopted on Thursday with 137 votes in favor.
In a press release issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs today, the Maldives welcomed the adoption of the resolution and described it as a significant step toward protecting humanitarian operations in Palestine.
The statement emphasized the importance of upholding the United Nations’ mission and the efforts of international organizations and third states to safeguard humanitarian access.
The Maldives also reiterated its commitment to a sovereign and independent Palestinian state based on pre-1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital.
This development comes amid an ongoing conflict in Gaza.
Since October 7, 2023, Israel has launched a military attacks in Gaza.
Palestine Health Ministry reports indicate that over 45,000 people, primarily women and children, have been killed.
Additionally, the International Criminal Court (ICC) issued arrest warrants on November 21 for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant on charges of war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza.
Israel is also facing a genocide case at the ICJ in relation to its military operations.
The Maldives’ support for the resolution reflects its broader commitment to addressing the humanitarian crisis and advancing justice for the Palestinian people.
