The Maldives Police Service (MPS) has begun enforcing the amended Tobacco Control Act, introducing strict penalties for anyone involved in the import, sale, free distribution, or use of electronic cigarettes and vaping devices.

Violators will receive fine notifications directly via mobile phone messages according to MPS.

The amendment to the Tobacco Control Act, ratified by the President in November, officially came into force on December 15, 2024.

It adopts a phased approach, starting with a ban on importing vaping devices from November 15, 2024.

A complete ban on the sale, distribution, and use of such products will follow on December 15, 2024.

Police have confirmed their commitment to taking legal action against those who violate the law.

They explained that fines for offenses will be communicated through SMS, which will also include a payment link to VaaruPay, simplifying the fine payment process.

Fines Under the New Law:

Importing vaping devices/products: MVR 50,000, with an additional MVR 10,000 per device.

Selling vaping products: MVR 20,000, plus MVR 10,000 for each item sold.

Free distribution of vaping devices: MVR 10,000 per device.

Selling vaping devices to minors: MVR 50,000 per incident.

The Maldives Police Service has urged individuals and businesses to adhere to the amended regulations and encouraged public cooperation to ensure compliance.
