HPA urges precaution as air quality declines in Maldives
The Maldives is grappling with declining air quality linked to the ongoing cyclone in the Bay of Bengal.
Shifting wind patterns during this period are carrying dust and debris towards the Maldives, significantly affecting air quality and causing a hazy atmosphere.
Data from the IQAir app reveals that Villimale' is the most affected area, with an air pollution index of 94—well above the preferred range of 0-50.
In Male', pollution levels were recorded at 82.
The Health Protection Agency (HPA) has issued precautionary guidelines to safeguard public health during this period of heightened air pollution.
The recommendations include:
- Individuals with lung or heart conditions, as well as those with allergies, should minimize outdoor activities.
- Wearing masks is advised for anyone venturing outside.
- Vulnerable groups such as children, pregnant women, and the elderly should avoid prolonged outdoor exposure, and infants should be kept indoors.
- Doors and windows should remain closed to limit exposure to polluted air.
- Outdoor exercise and sports activities should be reduced.
Haze, distinct from fog or mist, consists of fine dry particles that reduce visibility and create an unclear atmosphere.
Although generally harmless to healthy individuals, the haze can cause mild irritation to the eyes, nose, and throat.
However, people with asthma or heart conditions may experience severe side effects.
