Hulhumalé Hospital has officially been upgraded to a tertiary hospital, with significant advancements in its medical services.

The newly inaugurated facilities, including an Intensive Care Unit (ICU), operating theaters, and a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), were officially opened by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu in a ceremony held at the hospital today.

During the event, the official document certifying the hospital’s upgraded status was handed over to its management.

The Hulhumalé Hospital management expressed confidence that the enhanced services will revolutionize healthcare in the country, making it more accessible and comprehensive for the public.

The hospital’s new operation complex houses four state-of-the-art theaters, while the ICU and NICU are equipped with advanced medical technology.

The ICU now features 10 beds, and the NICU has been expanded to accommodate 14 beds.

These additions are expected to significantly reduce the number of patients referred to other hospitals for specialized care.

Speaking at the ceremony, Health Minister Abdulla Nazim Ibrahim emphasized the importance of developing healthcare infrastructure in Hulhumalé and Villimalé to ease the burden on Malé City’s health system.

He also highlighted that the government is working on transforming the healthcare system across the Maldives, including improving medical services in the atolls, to address long standing challenges.

Regarding the Aasandha system, the minister said that the Aasandha system is not at its best.

He noted that the allocated budget often falls short before the end of the year, indicates that it is not for the good of the people and the systemic inefficiencies.

“According to the statistics of Aasandha, the entire system has become a huge burden on the state economy as the budget approved by the Parliament is not enough in any year.”

Health Minister Nizam stated

He assured the public that reforms would prioritize providing assistance to those in greatest need, ensuring the program delivers better and more accessible healthcare for the people that need it the most.

First opened two decades ago, Hulhumalé Hospital has been a cornerstone of the Maldives’ healthcare system.

It remains one of the country’s most frequented hospitals, particularly for emergencies.
