President Dr. Muizzu ratifies amendment banning e-cigarettes and vaping devices
President Dr. Muizzu has ratified the First Amendment to the Tobacco Control Act, marking a major shift in the Maldives' approach to regulating tobacco and vaping products.
The amendment, which was passed by the 20th Parliament on 12 November 2024, prohibits the import, sale, free distribution, and use of electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes), vaping devices, and related products in the Maldives.
In addition to banning e-cigarettes and vaping devices, the amendment introduces a series of new regulations designed to curb tobacco use across the nation:
- Tobacco use will be prohibited in all government buildings and their surrounding areas.
- Fines will be imposed on both users and property owners for illegal tobacco use in business or service establishments, with the possibility of suspending smoking permits and business licenses.
- Selling tobacco products to individuals under the age of 21 is prohibited, and retailers must verify buyers’ age through official documentation.
- Advertising and displaying tobacco products, or their packaging, in retail locations will be banned
- .The cultivation of tobacco plants or the production of tobacco products within the Maldives is also prohibited, along with the importation of tobacco plants, seeds, and other related materials.
- Any form of illegal tobacco advertising, sponsorship, or promotion will be penalized.
The new provisions regarding e-cigarettes and vaping devices (Section 10-2) will take effect on 15 December 2024, while the other amendments concerning tobacco sales, use, and advertising will come into force on 15 November 2024.
The updated law is also accessible in the Government Gazette following its ratification.
