Former President Yameen criticizes MDP, dismisses possibility of joint opposition efforts
Former President Abdulla Yameen has confirmed he will not join the largest opposition party, the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), in any political initiatives.
Speaking on Raajje TV’s “Fashaairu” program, Yameen emphasized that he does not trust the MDP, stating he believes the party does not work in the best interest of the Maldives.
No, that is not going to happen. Our ideology is fundamentally different from that of the MDP. All the hardships I faced were due to the MDP government, so I have no reason to align with them,"
Yameen stated
He clarified that he has no intention of forming a political alliance with them to oppose the current administration.
"We can talk to the MDP, but making an agreement or working together politically to challenge the government is not something I am interested in doing with them."
Yameen said
Yameen, who currently leads the People's National Front (PNF), did note that the MDP has made some positive contributions; however, he expressed concerns over the party’s approach to foreign relations, particularly its reliance on India, which he claims has worsened the country’s situation.
Although Yameen previously supported some MDP candidates in parliamentary elections due to the PNF not fielding candidates in all constituencies, no formal cooperation has been established between the two parties.
PNF has consistently criticized the government, often aligning with MDP in this regard.
Nevertheless, neither party has indicated any plans to join forces politically.
Speculation occasionally arises about the possibility of the two parties uniting to hold the government accountable, but both sides have thus far maintained their separate paths.
