Maldives' two strongest institutions, MNDF and Police should be staffed by the most capable individuals: Yameen
Former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom emphasized the importance of recruiting highly capable individuals into the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) and Police, citing them as the nation’s strongest institutions.
Speaking at a rally organized by the People’s National Congress (PNF) yesterday, Yameen stressed that these roles should be filled by recruits with academic credentials, not simply “to dust and clean”.
People who can’t continue their education. Or not passing the GC properly. This is not what we want for the MNDF and police. The MNDF and police are the two strongest institutions in Maldives. People should be hired here on merit. There will be people who are willing to join their ranks now
Former President Yameen
Yameen clarified that he supports the employment of Maldivians in the security forces but expressed concerns over the budgetary limitations within the government’s current expenditure on MNDF and Police.
There should be 5,000 new soldiers by the end of five years. I have just done a calculation. The first recruits are paid MVR 13,000 as cadets. They get MVR 15,500 after the training program. Therefore, a thousand people would be requiring MVR 186 million a year from the budget,
Former President Yameen
According to Yameen, maintaining MNDF soldiers requires about MVR 200 million, and if an additional 1,000 recruits were taken for the police, it would demand a similar budget.
How will they manage this financially? Now many MPs are complaining that some budget numbers have been sent. The number is the same budget number. It is not achievable. Its details should be given so that it can be determined if its achievable or not.
Former President Yameen
Yameen’s remarks were made in light of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu's recent announcement of an inclusive initiative, which opens security force training to all Maldivian youth, regardless of their educational background or employment status.
