Kooddoo Airport resumes operations after runway repairs
Kooddoo Airport has resumed operations following extensive repairs to its runway, with the first post-repair flight—a Maldivian Airlines flight from Kaadedhdhoo—landing this morning.
An official from the airport’s operating company confirmed to Voice that the runway has been fully repaired, allowing regular flights to resume.
Maldivian Airlines, the national flag carrier, also announced that it has restarted flights to Kooddoo Airport.
Service to the airport was previously suspended in early October after Maldivian cited severe damage to the airport’s runway and apron.
The airline had grounded two of its aircraft due to issues caused by the runway’s deteriorating condition, prompting it to suspend flights for safety reasons.
Kooddoo Airport, which opened in 2012, is the busiest airport in the region, providing essential connectivity for travelers.
Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation Mohamed Ameen attributed the runway issues to years of neglect.
In a recent post on social media platform X, he explained that the condition of the runway had worsened over time, leading to prolonged repair needs and flight suspensions by Maldivian.
With repairs now complete, Kooddoo Airport has returned to full operation, offering flights as before and restoring an important travel route for the area.
