Maldives-New Zealand discuss new trade and Investment opportunities at UNGA

On the sidelines of the 79th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu held discussions with New Zealand’s Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Foreign Affairs, and Minister of Racing, Winston Peters, who also leads New Zealand’s delegation to the UNGA.

Their talks focused on expanding bilateral cooperation between the Maldives and New Zealand, emphasizing stronger people-to-people connections and exploring opportunities for trade and investment.


 President underscored the strategic importance of the Maldives' geographical location, which could offer mutual benefits for both nations.

Climate change was a key topic of discussion, with both leaders stressing the urgency of addressing environmental challenges and advocating for sustainable solutions on the global stage. 
They also looked ahead to the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting, scheduled for October in Samoa, as a platform for further collaboration on pressing global issues.

President Dr Muizzu highlighted the Maldives' youthful population and the growing demand for educational opportunities, inviting New Zealand to offer scholarships and invest in the nation's education sector.

He also extended an invitation to New Zealand investors, pointing to the Maldives' special economic zones as promising areas for foreign investment.

Concluding the meeting, the leaders reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening diplomatic ties and deepening strategic cooperation. 
Both expressed a shared determination to work together on common priorities, including climate resilience and economic development. Diplomatic relations between the Maldives and New Zealand were first established on October 10, 1974, marking nearly five decades of partnership.
