As Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu began his address at the 79th UN General Assembly in New York, the Maldives delegation left the hall in protest.

This move was part of a broader walkout by countries supporting Palestine, as a demonstration against Israel’s policies in the region.

Heena Waleed, the Spokesperson for President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, shared the news on X (formerly Twitter), stating that the Maldivian delegation exited in response to Netanyahu’s speech, in line with President Dr. Muizzu’s firm stance on Palestinian rights.

The walkout reflects the President’s dedication to supporting Palestine’s quest for independence.

Earlier in the week, President Dr. Muizzu met with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas in New York.

During the meeting, President Dr. Muizzu reiterated the Maldives' unwavering commitment to supporting Palestine and promised to back international efforts toward recognizing Palestine as an independent state.

He further assured that the Maldives would assist Palestine in all possible ways.

In his speech to the UN General Assembly, President Dr. Muizzu strongly condemned Israel’s actions against the Palestinian people.

He called on the international community to hold Israel accountable for its attacks on Palestinian schools, hospitals, humanitarian facilities, journalists, and civilians.

He also denounced Israel’s recent military actions in Lebanon.
