U.S. to provide additional USD 4.4 Million to Maldives
At a special event on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, USAID Administrator Samantha Power announced USD 4.4 million in new commitments to support democratic reforms in the Maldives.
The event, part of USAID's “Democracy Delivers” initiative, gathered global leaders and civil society partners to strengthen support for countries experiencing democratic progress.
The Maldives will receive USD 3 million to boost media literacy programs, enhance transparency, and equip youth with tools to navigate media content responsibly.
Another USD 1.4 million will fund initiatives that raise awareness about democratic rights, encourage civic engagement, and support local councils and women's development committees.
Maldives’ Permanent Representative to the UN, Ali Naseer Mohamed, joined leaders from other nations to underscore the country’s progress and welcome further investments.
The U.S. initiative, launched in 2022 by Secretary of State Antony Blinken and USAID, aims to deliver tangible improvements in countries undergoing democratic renewal.
This funding will align with the Maldives' ongoing efforts to foster government transparency and build an inclusive, environmentally sustainable economy.
Like-minded partners from Australia, Canada, and several European countries also committed to supporting the cause.
