Garage fire: several deceased to be transported to their home countries

Maldives Police Service (MPS) revealed on Friday that efforts are underway to transport the bodies of some expatriates who passed away in the fire at M.Nirufehi on Thursday morning and are being sent to their home countries. 

Police stated that initiatives are being carried out in collaboration with the Foreign Ministry and several diplomatic missions in the Maldives to transport the bodies.  

Police said today that the four women whose bodies have been identified so far are three Indians and one Bangladeshi. The bodies of men whose bodies have been identified so far include four Indians and one Bangladeshi at the same time.  Police have stated that the body of one of the 10 dead is still unidentified. 

According to the police, the situation is being investigated. They suffered severe burns. The structure where the fire started had residential rooms on the top floor and a garage on the ground floor.

A total of 38 migrant workers were living in the structure and they were informed that there was a gas bottle close to each bed they slept in. 

A total of 28 people have been rescued from the building and only a few of them are currently in the custody of the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA). At least 10 people were killed in the incident, making it the biggest such incident in the country.
