Parliament decides to re-examine the assassination attempt on former President Nasheed

The Security Services Committee (241 Committee) of the Parliament has decided to re-examine the assassination attempt on former President and former Speaker of Parliament Mohamed Nasheed.

In today's meeting, the committee unanimously decided to bring the matter to the attention of the government.

Speaking at the committee meeting, Deputy Speaker of the Parliament and Dhiggaru Constituency Member Ahmed Nazim said the biggest problem with the attack was the lack of coordination. 

Nazim also said that the National Counter Terrorism Center has not yet been able to investigate intelligence matters related to the attack.

The secret report on the attack on Nasheed says the biggest problem is that it has not been coordinated. Why don’t we bring this to the attention of the current government leaders? I ask the chair to clarify this

When asked about the progress of the parliament's efforts to share the issue with the government, committee chairman and Eydhafushi MP Ahmed Saleem said parliament had written a letter to bring the matter to the attention of the government and would submit it  today.

On May 6, 2021, a homemade remote-controlled IED was planted on a motorcycle parked near President Nasheed's residence in Male’. In this assasination attempt, Nasheed sustained multiple major wounds, while three members of his security detail and two bystanders sustained minor wounds.

Mujaz Ahmed, Thahmeen Ahmed, Ali Haisham, Fahmi Ali, Ishaq and Mohamed Nazim were charged in connection with the attack.

The attack was carried out by  Adham Ahmed Rasheed, of Hia, V.Thinadhoo, pleaded guilty.

He was convicted and sentenced to 23 years in prison.

The trials of all those involved in the case have not yet been completed.
