MMA Governor's absence prompts committee to recommend dismissal
The Governor of the Monetary Authority of the Maldives (MMA), Ali Hashim, may soon face dismissal following a recommendation from the Parliament's Public Accounts Committee to President Dr. Muizzu.
The committee advised this action after Hashim failed to appear before them for questioning, citing illness and responding in writing instead.
Parliament’s Public Accounts Committee Chairman and Maamigili Constituency Member Gasim Ibrahim reported that Hashim had expressed willingness to answer the committee's questions in writing.
However, the proposal to accept written responses did not gain support from any committee member.
Subsequently, Gasim proposed a vote among the committee members to recommend Hashim's removal from his position as Governor.
This motion was unanimously approved by the members present at the meeting.
The initiative to remove Hashim was spearheaded by Vice-President of Parliament and Dhiggaru MP Ahmed Nazim.
Nazim criticized Hashim for not fulfilling his responsibilities effectively.
He argued that Hashim had failed to advise the government on improving the state’s financial situation and was not working towards the objectives set by law for the MMA.
Nazim further alleged that Hashim's policy of indirectly withholding loans from banks and financial institutions, as well as maintaining their reserves within the MMA, had restricted the liquidity in the economy.
He noted that despite President Dr. Muizzu's administration being in power for seven months, the Governor had not provided any significant advice to the government or parliament.
In his defense, Hashim sent a letter to the committee asserting that the MMA had been actively providing the necessary information, guidance, and assistance to prevent an economic crisis.
He maintained that the MMA was operating within its powers to ensure the Maldives did not face an economic downturn.
