Türkiye and Maldives advance preferential trade talks in second negotiation round
The second round of negotiations for the Preferential Trade Agreement between Türkiye and the Maldives was convened today, representing another step forward in the efforts to enhance economic cooperation between the two nations.
This proposal aims to bolster trade relations between the two nations by providing preferential access to the Turkish market for a wide range of Maldivian goods.
If accepted, this initiative could significantly benefit Maldivian exporters, opening up new avenues for economic growth and prosperity.
These negotiations follow discussions initiated after President Muizzu's meeting with Turkey President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan in November last year, where the leaders explored avenues to strengthen bilateral relations.
President Muizzu's trip to Turkey marked his first official state visit since assuming the presidency in November.
During the visit, discussions centered on bolstering economic ties and exploring opportunities for collaboration across various sectors.
Subsequently, the first round of discussions on March 20 laid the groundwork for today's negotiations, focusing on key areas of mutual interest and potential cooperation.
Economic Minister Mohamed Saeed further took to social media X and underscored the significance of these negotiations, emphasizing their role in providing Maldivian exporters with preferential access to the Türkiye market.
Minister Saeed remarked on the progress of the negotiations, stating that regarding the agreement, the Maldives has requested Turkey to permit the export of 214 items at 0% tariffs.
