Japan Extends Free Aid to Maldives for Maritime Safety and Natural Disaster Response
In a press release issued today by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, it was announced that Japan has extended a substantial free aid package worth 6.5 million dollars to the Maldives.
The agreement, signed by Minister of Foreign Affairs, Moosa Zameer, and H.E. Takeuchi Midori, Ambassador of Japan to the Republic of Maldives, aims to bolster Maldives' capabilities in maritime safety and security enhancement and enhance the nation's response capacity to frequent natural hazards.
The press release outlined Japan's generous aid package, which includes:
1. A donation of a Customs Patrol Vessel.
2. A grant of 260 million JPY for the enhancement of maritime safety and security in the Maldives.
3. Allocation of 56 million JPY to provide essential equipment supporting the operations of patrol vessels to the Maldives Customs Service.
4. Provision of 600 million JPY for equipment to strengthen Maldives' national response capacity to high-frequency natural hazards through community-based initiatives.
During the ceremony, Minister Moosa Zameer expressed gratitude, affirming Japan's longstanding friendship with Maldives.
He highlighted the significance of Japan's assistance in mitigating the impact of natural disasters such as flooding.
Water pumps and fire safety aids provided today will be invaluable in addressing immediate needs during such crises.

Minister Zameer further underscored Japan's continuous support over the past 56 years, emphasizing the multifaceted ways in which Japan has contributed to Maldives' development.
The agreement signing ceremony witnessed the participation of senior officials from the Foreign Ministry, Maldives Customs Services, National Disaster Management delegates, and representatives from the Japanese Embassy.
Japan's substantial aid package marks a significant step in further strengthening the bilateral ties between the two nations, underscoring Japan's commitment to supporting Maldives' efforts in maritime security and disaster preparedness.
