President affirms zero tolerance for child sexual abuse perpetrators
President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has emphatically declared that individuals accused, charged, or convicted of child sexual abuse should not be granted pardons.
The President's statement, made today via a post on X, expressed deep concern over the release of preparators of sexual abuse
President Muizzu underscored the government's stance, stating that it had directed the Prosecutor General to appeal court decisions to release those implicated in child sexual abuse cases.
It is unacceptable to pardon or release those arrested or convicted of child sexual abuse
He firmly stated, urging swift action against such offenders
The President called upon the public to stand united in combating such heinous crimes.
While he did not reference any specific case in his remarks, last year saw a disturbing incident where a 13-year-old girl fell victim to sexual abuse by her 69-year-old grandfather.
Despite his arrest in August, the Veymandoo Magistrate Court controversially granted him conditional bail while his trial was pending.
Following the grandfather's release, outrage erupted among residents of the island, with many expressing their discontent on social media platforms.
The girl, who bravely confided in her teacher about the abuse occurring multiple times within their home, had her mother report the matter to the police.
It's worth noting that during the tenure of former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih's administration, a considerable number of individuals involved in gang fights and serious violent crimes were granted bail.
The Home Minister revealed that a total of 434 people were released during the previous government's tenure, with 19 individuals linked to serious violent offenses among them.
