Indian troops to be withdrawn from Maldives by May 2024: President

President Muizzu announced that all Indian military personnel stationed in the Maldives will be withdrawn before May 10, 2024.

This was announced in presidential address given today in last session of 19th Parliament.

During his address, the President revealed that discussions with the Indian government, conducted diplomatically, had yielded positive results.

In assuming the presidential office, I initiated crucial efforts, engaging in diplomatic discussions to fulfill my commitment of withdrawing Indian troops from the Maldives. Our administration formally requested the Indian government's cooperation, leading to ongoing discussions. Following the latest deliberations held, an agreement was reached. Accordingly, military personnel from one of the three aviation platforms in the Maldives will be withdrawn by March 10, 2024. Subsequently, the troops from the remaining two platforms will be withdrawn before May 10, 2024

The commitment to withdrawing Indian troops from the Maldives was a pivotal pledge made by the President during his campaign trail.

The President emphasized that discussions with the Indian government had been conducted in a cooperative and diplomatic manner, reflecting the importance of maintaining strong bilateral relations.

It is also important to note that last discussion was held on February 2nd in New Delhi.

This decision signifies a key step towards fulfilling campaign promises and underscores the administration's commitment to shaping foreign relations in alignment with national priorities.
