Discussions underway to increase air services in southern atolls
Discussions are underway to increase air services to the four southern atolls via Gan International Airport.
Addu International Airport (AIA)'s Managing Director Gais Naseer told local media that discussions are underway to increase air service to the southern atolls before Fly Dubai flights start up in February of the following year. According to Gais, the introduction of Fly Dubai flights will significantly boost tourism in the southern atolls, and its full benefits can be realized by organizing travel options and vacation opportunities for visitors there.
We are currently in discussions with Maldivian and Manta Air to enhance flights to the southern atolls, and the debut of RTL services [in those atolls] will be very beneficial, he added.
Gais said that the seaplane terminal being built at GIA for national carrier Maldivian has been finished and that seaplane flights would soon begin in the south of the nation.
Aishath Jennifer, the Deputy Managing Director of Maldivian, stated that talks are ongoing to increase the frequency of domestic flights to Addu to coincide with the start of Fly Dubai flights to the city. However, she added, the number of flights to Addu and the southern atolls will be raised based on demand and the number of travelers using Fly Dubai.
