“Finifenmaa” explosion

According to an announcement made by the Prosecutor General's office at the Supreme Court day before yesterday, there are currently no intentions to press charges against former Vice President Ahmed Adheeb in relation to the explosion of the "Finifenmaa" launch, which was carrying former President Yameen Abdul Gayyoom at the time.

In 2015, an attempt was made on the life of former Maldivian President Yameen Abdul Gayyoom when an explosive was detonated on the launch he was traveling in upon his return to Maldives after a pilgrimage to Saudi Arabia. The attack resulted in injuries to former President Yameen's wife, Fathimath Ibrahim, as well as his bodyguards and several other individuals. Former Vice President Ahmed Adheeb was initially charged with terrorism and sentenced to 15 years in prison, however, these charges were subsequently overturned by the High Court.

The High Court ordered a reinvestigation of the 2015 assassination attempt on former President Yameen after overturning Ahmed Adheeb's terrorism charges. However, the state later withdrew the case, which Yameen's lawyers claimed was part of an agreement with Adheeb regarding the MMPRC corruption case.

During today's discussion at the Supreme Court concerning the state's accusations of unethical and traitorous behavior by former President Yameen Abdul Gayyoom in the lease of R. Fuhgiri, the "Finifenmaa" launch case was also brought up.

In a summary of the case, former President Yameen Abdul Gayyoom's lawyer, Abdulla Shiyaz, stated today that while the case against Yameen regarding GA. Vodumula is still ongoing in the High Court, Ahmed Adheeb and Abdulla Ziyath were granted leniency as part of an agreement with the state regarding the MMPRC corruption case.

“The individual responsible for the attempt on President Yameen's life, Ahmed Adheeb, received leniency in a manner that would preclude him from being sentenced. The case was withdrawn from court, and the Prosecutor General agreed to review and reach a new decision on the matter."

During the proceedings, the state's lawyer Ahmed Shafeeu stated that the state has no intention of convicting anyone in relation to the explosion of the launch. When the judge asked whether the case had been permanently dismissed, Shafeeu responded that the Prosecutor General's office was not taking any action on the matter.

“Our office is not taking any action with regard to that case."

During the discussion, Shiyaz noted that although serious charges of treason were proven against both Ahmed Adheeb and Abdulla Ziyath, the state had not made any effort to recover the money involved. He went on to say that the state was allowing them to use the money gained through their treacherous actions by granting them leniency.

Shiyaz provided further details about Ahmed Adheeb and Abdulla Ziyath, who were offered as witnesses and evidence in the case against former President Yameen. Lawyers have raised concerns about the reliability of both individuals, claiming that they are disloyal to former President Yameen.

Former President Yameen Abdul Gayyoom had previously stated that the agreement reached earlier included a condition that there would be no further investigations into Ahmed Adheeb's involvement in the "Finifenmaa" launch explosion.
