Those who sold the territorial waters need to be confronted by defense forces - Member Saeed
Member Mohamed Saeedh of the Maavah constituency has called for the Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF) to confront those who supposedly sold Maldivian territorial waters.
During the emergency debate held regarding the confidentiality of the letter sent to the Prime Minister of Mauritius from President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, member Saeedh stated that Chagos Islands never belonged to Mauritius.
Member Saeed had also responded to statements made by some members of Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) who were defending the change in the state’s stand regarding Chagos Islands by the government.
According to member Saeed, the members who were defending the decision on the state’s stand regarding Chagos Islands are heavily influenced by the government. He also said that in an independent debate, none of the members would agree with the government regarding this.
In addition, member Saeedh also mentioned that Abdulla Shahid, Minister of Foreign Affairs, alone is not to be blamed for the selling of the territorial waters where Chagos is located. He said that these are all deals made after President Solih was handed presidential powers and Minister Abdulla Shahid was sworn in as the General Assembly President.
After highlighting all this, minister Saeed said that it is possible for Maldives to lose territorial rights over Chagos Islands just like it did with Minicoy Islands. He called for the MNDF to investigate this as this is a serious matter.
“All the power of the Maldivian state is handed over to the president. What I’m saying is that this deal suddenly appeared once all the power was given to President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and the Maldivian Foreign Minister was given a chair in the General Assembly of UN - I am not saying that Abdulla Shahid was the one who spent 500 million dollars, but what member Ibrahim Rasheed said needs to be investigated. President Solih, Foreign Minister, Vice President, and even Maldives National Defense Force needs to confront them.”
MP Mohamed Saeed (Maavashu)
Member Saeed said that there is historical proof that Chagos Islands belong to Maldives, and that to wait for Maldives to lose territorial rights despite there being a chance to keep it as a part of Maldivian territory, is something that future generations will mourn. He also added that this is something that this generation owe the future generations for.
