Maldives to raise concern over global rights violations at UNHRC
The Maldives has joined the 62nd session of the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC), which commenced yesterday in Geneva, Switzerland, and will run until 7 July 2026.
The session opened with remarks by the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, who presented an overview of the current global human rights landscape.
Aligned with its key policy priorities, the Maldivian delegation is set to deliver national statements under multiple agenda items throughout the session.
As part of the Core Group, the Maldives will also present a joint resolution to renew the mandate of the Special Rapporteur on the Independence of Judges and Lawyers.
The resolution will further address broader issues concerning judicial independence and the legal profession.
In its capacity as a member of both the Non-Aligned Movement and the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, the Maldives has voiced concern over the rising trend of human rights violations worldwide.
During the session, the country is expected to highlight several pressing concerns, including through a national statement during the Interactive Dialogue with the Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem, and Israel.
The Maldivian delegation is led by Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations Office in Geneva, Dr. Salma Rasheed.
The delegation also includes Counsellors Adam Hamid and Uza. Aminath Shifaya Ibrahim, Second Secretary Aishath Rayahyn, and Attaché Raaidh Saeedh from the Permanent Mission of the Maldives in Geneva.
The Human Rights Council, an intergovernmental body within the United Nations system, is tasked with promoting and protecting human rights globally, addressing violations, and making recommendations.
Although the Maldives concluded its third term as a Council member in 2025, it continues to actively engage in its work, contributing to discussions on both thematic human rights issues and country-specific situations.
