Maldives Police Service has released details of its investigation into former Controller General of Immigration Mohamed Shamaan Waheed, responding to claims he recently made during a media briefing.

In a statement, police said the investigation into allegations of corruption, abuse of power, and money laundering was carried out in accordance with Maldivian laws and established legal procedures.

Authorities said the investigation found that Shamaan was aware of developments related to an immigration operation from the planning stage through to its implementation.

According to police, several foreign nationals were detained during an immigration operation on the night of March 11, 2025.

Investigators found that Shamaan was informed about the operation and later instructed that one of the detainees be released.

Police said the released individual was transported in an official immigration vehicle by two immigration employees.

During the process, the employees allegedly contacted Shamaan regarding a payment required for the individual's release.

Investigators stated that the amount discussed was MVR 500,000.

The investigation further found that the two employees visited the apartment building where Shamaan lived at around 3:00 a.m. carrying a bag believed to contain cash.

Police said the pair left the building a few minutes later without the bag.

Authorities also revealed that MVR 259,837.35 was deposited into two Bank of Maldives accounts opened in Shamaan's name on March 13, 2025.

Police also addressed claims made by Shamaan that evidence of corruption was stored on his mobile phone, which remains in police custody.

According to the statement, Shamaan did not provide any such information during the investigation or after his release from detention.

Police added that they are not aware of any corruption-related evidence being submitted to other institutions either.

The statement further rejected allegations that the investigation was politically motivated or conducted with a predetermined outcome.

Police noted that the investigation was completed and forwarded to the Prosecutor General's Office before being heard in court.

The Criminal Court has since delivered its verdict in the case.

Authorities said any party dissatisfied with the ruling has the right to challenge the decision through the appeal process.
