Hithadhoo Port agreement signed for bonded warehouse and duty-free facilities
Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) and the Ministry of Economic Development and Trade have signed an agreement to establish a bonded zone, duty-free zone, and bulk cargo facility at Hithadhoo commercial port in Addu City.
The pact was formalised by MPL CEO Mohamed Rishwan and Minister Mohamed Saeed during a ceremony marking the 20th anniversary of Hithadhoo port, held at Addu High School.
MPL explained that the duty-free zone will enable traders to store essentials and food products at significantly reduced costs without paying import duties.
The bonded warehouse will simplify secure storage for tourism operators importing goods under special permits, while the bulk cargo facility will support temporary storage of construction materials like sand and gravel, boosting southern region development.
While there are two ports (in the north and south), having two satellite ports itself will not bring about business. Businesses will establish only when systems are set to establish these businesses
Economic Minister Saeed said
Minister Saeed emphasised maximising harbour potential through such services.
This aligns with President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s recent Presidential Statement, which identified Addu the nation’s second-largest city as a future IT hub with enhanced business-friendly infrastructure.
In that regard, as mentioned by the President in the presidential address, with the plan to relocate Malé Commercial Harbour to Thilafushi during November, expanding the services of the regional harbours is an important matter as well.
MPL CEO Rishwan noted these southern port upgrades will ease congestion at Malé’s main harbour.
The project aims to position Addu as a leader in southern atoll development, enhancing food security, business opportunities, and economic growth.
It will be very easing and pleasing to us all when the prices of the cargo coming into our atolls go down and this will bring about a lot of benefits for the people
