The Parliament has today passed a resolution to accept for consideration a proposal submitted by Mohamed Ibrahim (Kudoo), the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) Member of Parliament for Galolhu North constituency.

The proposal aims to gather the views of parliamentarians on extending access to the Maldives’ Universal Health Insurance Scheme, Aasandha, to foreign nationals married to Maldivian citizens.

The resolution to accept the proposal was unanimously approved, with all 47 members present voting in favor during today’s parliamentary sitting.

While presenting the resolution, MP mohamed Ibrahim highlighted that many foreigners residing in the Maldives have significantly contributed to the nation, including those who have served the state or represented the country in national sports teams.
He clarified that the initiative is not intended for foreigners seeking marriage visas for employment purposes, but rather for long-term residents who are part of Maldivian families.

There are many foreigners married to Maldivians who pay taxes. These are people who are now called grandparents and great-grandparents. We’re not talking about everyone

MP Mohamed stated

He suggested that specific principles or eligibility conditions could be set when considering health insurance coverage for such individuals. Examples included requiring proof of long-term residence, marriage duration, or having children in the Maldives.
MP also mentioned the possibility of making insurance mandatory when issuing marriage visas.

Following parliamentary approval, the proposal has been forwarded to the Social Affairs Committee for further review and recommendations.
