Japan elects first female Prime Minister; Maldives’ President offers congratulations
President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has extended warm congratulations to Sanae Takaichi on her historic election as Japan’s first female prime minister, marking a significant milestone in the nation’s postwar political landscape.
Takaichi was elected on Tuesday after securing 237 votes in Japan’s 465-member House of Representatives, comfortably surpassing the required majority. Her election came a day after the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) and the right-wing Japan Innovation Party (Ishin) reached a coalition agreement, paving the way for her leadership.
In a message shared on social media, President Muizzu congratulated the newly elected leader, writing,
Congratulations Your Excellency [@takaichi_sanae] on your election as the first female Prime Minister of Japan

Following her election by the lower house, Takaichi’s appointment was endorsed by the upper house, which holds less legislative power.
She is expected to be formally sworn in as Japan’s 104th prime minister later on Tuesday, succeeding Shigeru Ishiba, who stepped down last month after his party suffered major electoral setbacks.
