Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) has announced the successful completion of the Maldives’ first Tenckhoff peritoneal dialysis catheter insertion surgery, marking a significant milestone in the country’s renal care services.

In a post on X, IGMH stated that it has been 18 months since the hospital began providing peritoneal dialysis services.

The hospital noted that the treatment is a safe and painless option that can be performed by patients independently in their own homes or islands , without the need for a machine.

According to IGMH, the first successful Tenckhoff catheter insertion surgery was carried out in early October by a specialized team of Maldivian doctors trained in surgery, urology, anesthesia, and nephrology.

The introduction of this procedure officially launches the hospital’s new service for peritoneal dialysis catheter insertion.

IGMH added that additional training programs related to the service are currently ongoing to further enhance local expertise and ensure the continuity of advanced dialysis care.

The introduction of peritoneal dialysis catheter surgery represents a major step in expanding access to modern, patient-centered renal treatment in the Maldives.
