Fisheries Ministry, World Bank launch program to train youth in fishing
The Ministry of Fisheries and Ocean Resources has announced a new initiative to train young Maldivians for careers in the fisheries sector, in collaboration with the World Bank.
According to the Ministry, the program aims to cultivate youth interest in fisheries while equipping participants with the technical knowledge and practical experience needed to pursue employment in the field.
The three-month training will be conducted under the “Transforming Fisheries Sector in South-West Indian Ocean Region and Maldives Project” supported by the World Bank.
The Ministry stated that the program will offer both theoretical and hands-on learning opportunities, including practical fishing sessions aboard one of the Maldives’ leading skipjack tuna pole-and-line vessels.
Participants will also have the chance to learn directly from some of the nation’s most experienced fishing captains.
Scheduled to take place from November through January, the program is open to youth under 24 years of age who are not currently registered in the Ministry’s fisheries registry.
Applicants under 18 may participate with parental consent.
Participants will also receive a daily allowance during the course of the training.
Applications are now open and can be submitted via email to the Ministry of Fisheries and Ocean Resources before October 23.
