Former President Abdulla Yameen has congratulated the first batch of doctors trained at the Maldives National University (MNU) School of Medicine, commending the milestone as a testament to efforts initiated during his administration to build local capacity in the health sector.

In a post shared on social media, Yameen expressed his delight at witnessing the outcomes of initiatives launched under his government to strengthen the Maldivian health system through sustainable human resource development.

He expressed that he is happy to see the results of the work begun to build human resources for sustainably strengthening and developing the Maldivian health system, adding that he proudly welcomes and congratulates the new Maldivian doctors entering national service.

The first cohort of twenty medical students from MNU graduated on October 31, 2024, completing their one-year internship this year.

They are now officially joining the health service as fully qualified doctors.

Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) announced that the first group of locally trained doctors is ready to begin service, with a special ceremony held to mark the occasion.

The MNU medical program, which began during President Yameen’s administration, was established with the goal of producing local doctors and reducing dependency on foreign medical professionals.
