The Maldives Meteorological Service (MET Office) has issued an official weather advisory, warning that the southwest monsoon is expected to intensify over the Maldives in the coming days, bringing strong westerly winds, rough seas, and widespread rainfall across the country.

According to the forecast, winds are likely to strengthen and become more severe during squalls, while sea conditions will remain generally rough posing significant risks to small vessels and inter-island travel.

The MET Office also noted the likelihood of scattered rain and thunderstorms across multiple regions, with possible tidal surges during high tide periods.

Authorities have urged residents and travelers to remain alert, stay informed through official forecasts, and avoid unnecessary sea travel, particularly between October 17 and 20, 2025, when weather conditions are expected to be most hazardous.

Officials emphasized the importance of preparedness and caution, especially for fishermen, boat operators, and island communities, as the southwest monsoon continues to dominate the region’s weather patterns.

The public has been advised to:

- Stay updated with MET forecasts and alerts

- Avoid sea travel during rough conditions

- Exercise caution during squalls and high tide

- Postpone non-essential trips until conditions improve

Meanwhile, the worsening weather has already resulted in a landing craft and another vessel capsizing, leaving two people dead and one person still missing, according to reports.
