Maldives Gas Ex-MD convicted of bribery, sentenced to 12 years

The former Managing Director of Maldives Gas Pvt Ltd, Abdulla Maumoon, who was appointed during the administration of former President Abdulla Yameen, has been sentenced to 12 years, nine months, and 18 days in prison on bribery charges.

Maumoon was accused of accepting MVR 3.1 million (MVR 3,106,189.38) in bribes while overseeing the procurement of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) from a foreign supplier during his tenure at the state-owned company. 

The Criminal Court delivered its ruling on two of the seven charges filed against him under the Prevention and Prohibition of Corruption Act.

Five additional charges remain pending against Maumoon, with hearings adjourned to a later date.

The seven charges brought against him include:

1. Accepting bribery in connection with an action taken by the State

2. Obtaining undue advantage by misusing influence of official position

3. Attempted offense under the Penal Code of Maldives

4. Attempting to commit a crime

5. Conspiracy to commit a crime

6. Accepting a bribe

7. Abuse of official influence to obtain benefits
