Architect of Maldives’ Islamic Centre makes historic return after 40 years
The architect of the Maldives’ Islamic Centre, Malaysian designer Dato’ Hajeedar Abdul Majid, visited the landmark mosque today his first return to the site in four decades.
The Ministry of Islamic Affairs hosted a special ceremony in honor of the distinguished guest. The event was attended by Vice Chairman of the Maumoon Foundation, Faris Maumoon, and Abdullah Kamaluddin, alongside senior officials.
Minister of Islamic Affairs, Dr. Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed, delivered the keynote address, extending deep gratitude to Dato’ Hajeedar for his remarkable contribution in designing the Islamic Centre, which harmoniously blends traditional Islamic architecture with modern concepts.
The Minister also paid tribute to the Centre’s founder, former President H.E. Maumoon Abdul Qayyoom, for his visionary leadership in initiating the project.
He further acknowledged the dedication of the team who brought the design to life.
Speaking on the Centre’s enduring significance, Minister Shaheem described it as
much more than a building – it is a light of guidance, a house of knowledge and worship, and the central hub of Islamic administration in our country.

He noted that the Centre has profoundly shaped Maldivian society by teaching the Qur’an, spreading Islamic knowledge, and nurturing Islamic culture and civilization.
Calling the architect’s visit a historic moment, Minister Shaheem expressed that many Maldivians had long wished to meet the mind behind the Centre’s timeless design.
He concluded by praying for Dato’ Hajeedar’s good health and thanking him for his visit.
