Maldives launches new healthcare software to enhance patient safety
The Maldives has introduced a new Health Establishment Management System (HEMS), a software platform designed to provide citizens with accurate and verifiable information on all health facilities and the services they are licensed to offer.
The launch was officiated by First Lady Saajidha Mohamed during a ceremony marking this year’s World Patient Safety Day.
HEMS aims to strengthen patient confidence and safety by allowing the public to check the credentials of healthcare providers and professionals registered in the Maldives, as well as verify the specific services they are authorized to deliver.
In addition to the software launch, officials announced a collaboration with Joint Commission International (JCI) to implement a Patient Safety Pathway in three major hospitals: Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH), Dharumavantha Hospital, and Addu Equatorial Hospital (AEH).
This initiative will align hospital practices with World Health Organization (WHO) standards and identify best practices for patient safety.
The programme also introduced a training initiative for JCI Patient Safety Champions.
The first cohort includes seven champions, who will be trained to ensure high standards of care, compassion, and patient protection on the frontlines.
They will also be responsible for training staff across hospitals and healthcare facilities nationwide.
This year’s World Patient Safety Day focused on newborn and child safety, featuring a panel discussion on precautions during pregnancy and best practices for infant and child healthcare.
