Nasheed endorses President’s proposal to cut former Presidents’ privileges
Former President Mohamed Nasheed has expressed support for President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s initiative to amend the Constitution and reduce privileges granted to former heads of state.
At present, Maldivian law entitles past presidents and parliamentarians to various benefits, a system often criticized by the public for being a burden on the state budget.
The government has now announced plans to revise these provisions, including reducing pensions and allowances.
In a social media post, Nasheed said he backed lowering the pensions paid to former leaders.
I also see a reduction in the amount of pensions for former presidents as a good step
He wrote
According to the Privileges and Protection for Former Presidents Act, presidents who complete one term receive a monthly allowance of USD 3,343, while those who serve more than one term receive USD 4,864.
Additionally, the state provides up to USD 3,243 per month for residential expenses and as much as USD 11,349 monthly for office costs, staff, and facilities to support public or social work.
