Former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has raised concerns over the status of USD 87 million allocated for the construction of six airports across the Maldives.

Speaking at a public meeting in Bodufulhadhoo, Solih noted that the projects, planned during his administration, included airports in Makunudhoo, Bilehdhoo, Berianfaru, Thulhaadhoo, Magoodhoo, and Vilufushi, with all necessary funding secured at the time.

He added that nearly two years have passed, yet none of these projects have been implemented, questioning the whereabouts of the funds.

He also mentioned that USD 10 million had been earmarked for the development of Kadhdhoo Airport.

During the meeting, Solih criticized President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu and the current administration for changes to the decentralization system, which he said effectively “lock” councils in their final year and prevent financial transactions.

He assured that if the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) returns to power in 2028, these changes will be revoked, and councils’ powers will be fully restored.

Once again, in 2028, the Maldives will be governed by an MDP government. In that government, we will once again devolve the powers of the decentralized system to the councils

He added

Solih also criticized the government for failing to expand the Raajje Transport Link (RTL) ferry service nationwide.

He stated that under an MDP government, the RTL service would have been operational across the country by June 2024.
