From hospitals to roads: Ambassador Kong highlights China’s support for Maldives’ growth
China has continued to strengthen its partnership with the Maldives, providing extensive support for the country’s infrastructure and development initiatives.
At a press briefing held today, Chinese Ambassador Kong Xianhua highlighted several key projects fully funded by China, including the China–Maldives Friendship Hospital in Villingili, road redevelopment projects in Malé and Villingili, and new Island Council buildings across multiple islands.
Expanding on the update on these projects,
The hospital is in the design building process. We will select a team for the design of this hospital after a short period of time. The road redevelopment project, we have submitted the exchange of letters to the Ministry of Infrastructure for signing. After these letters are signed, we start the bidding process. And the Island Council building projects have just finished the feasibility study. A team came to the Maldives last month. They visited roughly 21 islands and they have finished their feasibility study
He stated
Ambassador Kong added that these initiatives mark a new stage in China–Maldives cooperation.
These agreements have injected strong momentum into China–Maldives cooperation, marking a new stage in practical collaboration
Ambassador added
The ambassador also noted that China is fostering broader cooperation beyond grant-funded projects.
Eleven Memoranda of Understanding were signed during President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s recent visit to China, covering sectors such as agriculture, fisheries, renewable energy, electricity, and vocational education.
Ambassador Kong described the growing China–Maldives partnership as evolving from short-term support to sustainable, integrated development, with a focus on nurturing internal capacity and encouraging investment in key industries.
These projects and agreements reflect China’s broader vision for long-term collaboration with the Maldives, moving beyond short-term aid toward sustainable development. By investing in key infrastructure, human resources, and strategic sectors, both countries aim to strengthen economic growth, improve public services, and create lasting benefits for communities across the Maldives.
