Japan provides USD 10.5 Million grant to strengthen disaster preparedness in Malé
The Government of the Maldives and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) signed a grant agreement worth JPY 1.56 billion (approximately USD 10.5 million) today to support the Construction Phase of the Malé Island Disaster Resilience Enhancement Project.
The agreement was signed in Malé by Deputy Minister of Finance and Planning Hassan Miras and JICA Maldives Office Resident Representative Taki Motoo.
This follows a previous grant agreement signed in October 2024, under which JICA provided up to JPY 20 million for the detailed design of the project.
The project aims to strengthen disaster resilience in Malé by reducing damage from waves and heavy rainfall through the rehabilitation of seawalls and the installation of stormwater drainage equipment, thereby safeguarding lives, economic activities, and social infrastructure in the capital.
Key details of the project include:
- Rehabilitation of the seawall surrounding Malé Island.
- Procurement and installation of equipment for stormwater drainage.
- Consulting services to support project implementation.
The project is expected to enhance Malé’s resilience against water-related disasters and stabilize essential services, contributing to sustainable urban development in the capital.
