Government to launch 20-Year National Development Masterplan in January
The government has announced that the Maldives’ 20-year National Development Masterplan, Viluntheri Raajje 2045 (Resilient Maldives), is set to be inaugurated in January next year.
The plan will guide national development from 2025 to 2045, with all preparatory work expected to be completed by June.
The Ministry of Finance and Planning shared details with the media today, noting that drafting work has already commenced.
The first pilot program began yesterday in K. Guraidhoo, with teams scheduled to visit multiple atolls over the coming weeks.
According to the Planning Department, ten teams will be mobilized to gather input from communities across 180 inhabited islands within three weeks.
Consultations will focus on residents’ views on the future of their islands in terms of urban development, the economy, and other priority areas.
The government has entrusted Nexia Maldives with the task of developing the plan.
Officials emphasized that Viluntheri Raajje 2045 is a participatory initiative, designed to include the voices of as many Maldivians as possible in shaping the country’s long-term vision.
Highlighting the importance of the plan, the government said it forms part of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s broader vision to transform the Maldives into a developed nation by 2040.
The initiative aims to ensure that all national activities are aligned with a long-term strategy, promoting sustainable use of resources, resilience to climate change, and adaptability to shifts in the global economy and technology.
