As Brazil marks Independence, Maldives pledges stronger bilateral ties

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has extended greetings to Brazil on the occasion of its Independence Day, reaffirming the Maldives’ commitment to strengthening bilateral cooperation in sustainable development and climate action.

In a message addressed to President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, the Brazilian government, and its people, President Muizzu conveyed the good wishes of the Maldivian people.

He described the partnership between the two countries as a “valued collaboration” and stressed the importance of “nurturing common goals for the mutual benefit of both nations.”

The statement also noted the Maldives’ anticipated participation in COP30, the United Nations climate summit scheduled to take place in Belém, Brazil.

President Muizzu expressed confidence that engagement at such platforms would further deepen bilateral relations.

Sharing his sentiments on his official X account, President Muizzu highlighted the approaching four-decade milestone of diplomatic ties between the Maldives and Brazil, established on 27 September 1988.

Brazil marks its Independence Day annually on 7 September, commemorating the 1822 declaration of independence from the United Kingdom of Portugal, Brazil, and Algarves, establishing Brazil as a sovereign nation.
